5 Wearable Winter Fashion Trends to Refresh Your Wardrobe in 2025

Now that Thanksgiving is behind us and cold weather is setting in, I’m starting to get excited about the winter trends. I always find myself naturally shifting my wardrobe as fall turns to winter, reaching for cozier layers and deeper hues; and with all of the sales going on right now, this is a great time to update your closet with a few new pieces that feel fresh and modern.

While spring and fall tend to usher in the biggest fashion trends, there are always a few fresh ideas and emerging colors to keep an eye on as winter unfolds. It’s fun to see what’s new and figure out which trends are worth trying (or not). So, after a bit of internet research and lots of window shopping, I’ve rounded up five of my favorite wearable winter fashion trends for 2025! Think everyday-friendly styles you can wear without feeling like a fashion experiment.

Of course, personal style always comes first. Not every trend will work for every person, and that’s a good thing! The goal is to stay open to fresh ideas, while still staying true to your personal style. If you see a style you’re unsure about, before dismissing it completely, consider how you might tweak it to work for you—this is how to keep your look current and avoid a style rut.

Easy Winter Trends to Freshen Up Your Look

Here are five wearable winter trends I’m loving for 2025… and one I’m not. Whether you try one or all of them, I hope you find a few fresh ideas to inspire your winter wardrobe!

Grey Denim: A Fresh Take on Classic Black Jeans

MOTHER Weekender in Wanted! // Marc Fisher boots (8) // Vince turtleneck (M) // similar belt // Anthro bracelet

This is easily the winter trend I’m most excited about. Grey jeans are just as versatile as black jeans, but with a little more edge and personality. And while black denim can sometimes feel too sleek or serious, grey denim has a more relaxed, lived-in vibe. It’s the perfect way to keep your outfits feeling current without stepping too far out of your comfort zone.

I recently added the MOTHER Weekender in Wanted! to my closet, and it’s exactly what I was looking for and didn’t know I needed. I’ve already worn them several times in the past week. The faded dark grey tone with subtle whiskering and fading down the thighs gives it that perfectly worn-in look that somehow feels elevated, not sloppy. The flare silhouette of The Weekender is my personal favorite, but if flares aren’t your style, The Tomcat and The Hustler Roller Sneak are other tempting MOTHER denim options in a modern grey wash.

Statement Outerwear: Bold Layers That Instantly Elevate Your Look

teddy coat (S) // bootcut jeans (29) // Blondo boots (8) // caramel leather bag // sunnies (tom ford) // silver hoops

Once you have your everyday outerwear essentials covered, it’s fun to add a statement coat to the mix. This is the coat you reach for when you want your whole outfit to feel more intentional—like you put in extra effort (even if you didn’t).

One of the freshest styles in this category is the scarf coat, and that’s next on my personal shopping list. With its built-in scarf detail, this coat adds both function and flair, and it’s an easy way to make a simple outfit feel polished and put-together. Capes are also making a comeback this season, bringing a sophisticated, tailored vibe that feels a little unexpected but still timeless.

Faux fur, shearling, and teddy coats are still going strong, as well. Faux fur adds instant glamour and a touch of drama, while sherpa and other textured fabrics bring warmth and dimension to your look. A plush faux fur coat can feel luxe for holiday outings, but it’s also surprisingly wearable with jeans and boots for an elevated everyday look.

If you’re looking to add one new outerwear piece this winter, make it a statement coat. It’s the one layer that can turn any outfit into A Look.

Jewel Tones: Regal Hues That Add Color Without Compromising Sophistication

I still love my neutrals, but sometimes I find myself craving a little color after the holidays, and I’m thrilled to see jewel tones having a moment this winter. Think rich, saturated hues like emerald green, sapphire blue, ruby red, and amethyst purple—these colors are everywhere right now, and I hear they’ll be going strong into Winter 2025.

I’m always fond of shades of burgundy, but this season I’m feeling particularly drawn to emerald green, and I’m seeing some striking shades of sapphire and amethyst starting to pop up at my favorite retailers. I like the idea of incorporating color into my winter wardrobe with scarves and other accessories.

Square Toe Shoes & Boots: Modern Lines for a Sleek, Fashion-Forward Finish

Frank & Eileen plaid button-up c/o (S) // Frank & Eileen Derry Signature Jeans c/o (30) // Schutz Arissa Square Toe Ballet Flats (8)

If you’re looking for a subtle way to make your outfits feel more modern, I’m noticing shoes with squared-off toes popping up in everything from ballet flats to ankle boots. I especially love this look in ballet flats because it makes them look less sweet, but I’m also feeling drawn to square-toe boots.

Square toe boots have a slightly edgier feel than their pointy-toe counterparts, so they work well for more casual looks. (I’m not saying that pointed toe boots are out, I’m just saying that we’re starting to see more square-toe styles enter the scene after being on the back-burner for a while.)

If you’re ready to refresh your footwear collection, consider adding a pair of square-toe boots or flats to your closet. Here are some that caught my eye.

Monochromatic Dressing: Head-to-Toe Style That Always Looks Polished

AllSaints bomber jacket (S) // Treasure & Bond sweater (M) // Frame Le Slim Raw Hem Palazzo (29) (budget option) // Sam Edelman boots (8) // Hammitt crossbody // similar hoop earrings // layer necklace // VE bracelet // YSL sunnies (similar for less)

Of the five trends listed here, this is probably the least “new” but it’s still going strong into Winter 2025, and it’s the one I’m leaning into the most right now. Monochrome speaks to my quiet luxury side, and you can achieve this chic look with any color tone or pant silhouette.

Black on black is easy, but I also like to combine lighter neutrals, like oatmeal or camel with shades of grey. My sweater is old, but any shade of oatmeal or camel works well with grey jeans. I went with black boots, which work with my hair to bookend the look, but you could also wear off-white for a fresh update.

And you can also create monochromatic looks with the jewel tones that are trending! The key to making a monochromatic look work is to combine textures, and be sure your fit and proportion is on point. Here, the satin midi skirt creates a pleasing contrast against the cozy knitwear, and the suede boots give it a luxe finish. Although, I think suede pumps or slingbacks would also be nice with this look; the boots are a little heavy with it.

FIT TIP: I sized down to an XS in this sweater so it would be a little shorter and more fitted through the waist, but I needed the medium in the bias-cut skirt.

The One That Didn’t Make The List: Embellished Denim

While it didn’t make my top 5 list, embellished denim is having a moment this winter. From subtle beading to bold rhinestones, playful details are popping up everywhere, adding flair to an otherwise simple pair of jeans.

This is one of those trends that is hitting hard and fast. I often notice trends developing a year or more before they hit the mainstream, but embellished denim was practically non-existent last season, and this season, it is ev-er-y-where. I mean, I even found the pair above at LOFT! You know when it hits LOFT, it’s mainstream.

So, why didn’t it make my list? For one, I already included grey denim and didn’t want two denim trends in my top 5. But also, this trend is a hard pass for me. No matter how expensive they are, embellished jeans just look cheap to me, and they don’t feel authentic to my personal style.

SIDE NOTE: I define my style as modern, polished, and understated. I find it so helpful to put words on my style goals; if you haven’t done that, I highly recommend this podcast to get you started!

All that to say, I’m pretty sure I’ll be sitting this trend out… although my opinions regarding fashion and style are always subject to change without notice. I’ve learned to Never Say Never, and I may be singing a different tune come Spring. But for right now, it’s a no for me, Dawg.

If you do love this trend but prefer a more subtle take, look for styles with just a hint of embellishment at the waist or on the pockets. And if you can’t find what you want at your desired price point, this is an easy DIY project.

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Which of these 5 Winter Fashion Trends will you be leaning into this season? And which ones are you sitting out?
